Why I Love Being an Aunt

There are so many reasons why being an Aunt is one of the best things someone could experience! But I thought I would talk about a few of my favorite things I get to experience while being an Aunt to two beautiful nephews and another one on the way.

First a little background; my sister Amanda, we call her Lulu for short- I know cute right! Blessed me with the most amazing nephew, after 35 hours of labor, Liam, a chubby ball of cuteness graced us with his presence. Liam from the start was very laid back and preferred to observe and take in his surroundings, even to this day I can almost see the gears moving in his head while he sees something new for the first time. Liam loves to laugh and has the most heart-melting smile for if you see it, you can’t help but smile yourself.

Two years later my sister told me in secret she was expecting again (we find it hard to keep secrets from one another). I was over the moon thrilled but found it ridiculously hard not to scream to the world I was going to be an Aunt again. Amanda and Chris wanted to wait for a month or so before telling the family- and trust me this was the hardest thing for me to do! Full disclosure though, I did tell a few friends and co-workers, but it's ok, Amanda never found out!

On a beautiful day in December, Eli- who I was secretly hoping was a girl and the doctors just read the ultrasound wrong was born. It's ok I said that because I wasn’t the only one in the family who was thinking or praying for the same thing. Nonetheless, Eli was indeed a boy. And boy oh boy did he come in fast and loud, complete opposite from his older brother. Eli is almost a year old, and by far is the happiest baby I’ve ever known. Eli has so much love to give, you can feel it every time he wraps his little arms around your neck. Unlike Liam, Eli has a more hands on approach while seeing or experiencing something new for the first time- which keeps us all on our toes. These boys are my everything, I never realized I was missing a crucial piece of my life until these boys came into it.

Anyways, this brings me to my first reason why Aunt Life is the best!

It’s Impossible to be in a bad mood

I can’t speak for everyone but for me if I’m having a bad day, I go and see my nephews. All it takes is a hug, smile, laugh or a cuddle and the dark cloud above my head is instantly lifted and turned into sunshine and rainbows. It’s like a superpower all nieces and nephews have- seriously, it’s amazing!

Best of both worlds

You get to experience mom life but also have nights and weekends off- can’t get any better than that? It’s like bam! I’m tired, time to send them back home. Plus, you not only get to be like a mom, but you can be the cool, fun mom without having to deal with the dramatics that tend to follow! Again, I ask, does it get any better than that? I think not! Being able to spend quality time with my nephews truly does mean the world to me, I can pass on some of my knowledge I’ve learned along the way to them. Which brings me to my next reason why Aunt life is the best.

Being a role model

Being a part of their lives and helping mold them into their best selves is something I don’t take lightly. I’m honored to be able to encourage, guide and teach them. I want my little loves to have passion and drive for life, compassion and empathy for others and our world. Courage and strength to follow their dreams and to succeed in life.

Channeling your inner child

Who out there has ever wanted to be a kid again? Want to make a mud pie? Twirl around until you get dizzy? Eat junk food? Lounge around in your pajamas? Go to the park and play all day? Build a fort? Well, being an Aunt gives you the opportunity to channel your inner child. Take it from me, it’s a lot of fun to be a kid again, plus you get to share it with your nieces or nephews. What else could you ask for?

An unbreakable bond

No matter how long or how far apart I am from my boys I know our bond will never break because of the time we spend together and the relationship we have created. I look forward to watching them grow into amazing individuals. Lastly, I want to thank them for making me a better person, a stronger person, and a more compassionate person.

Until Next Time-
